They were creating before they could write

I stood before various objects made by the ancient Minoans yesterday.
I was at the Archaeological Museum in Heraklion, Crete.
They were cranking out beautiful pieces of pottery, figurines, and carvings up to 5,000 years ago.
These people were creating art for over a thousand years before they even developed writing.
They couldn't write a single word, but they needed to make things. They needed to express something. And what they made is still inspiring design thousands of years later.
It struck me that this urge to create isn't optional. It's not a hobby for people with spare time. It's something humans do to stay sane, to process the world, to connect, and to feel alive.
A society without creative expression doesn't flourish. The Minoans understood this, and so should we.
I think about this when people tell me they want to write, but keep putting it off. They're waiting to feel ready, waiting for the right time, waiting until they have something important enough to say.
But the Minoans weren't waiting for permission. They just made things.
Writing is the most accessible creative outlet we have. You can do it anywhere. I wrote in a notebook by a church for three minutes this morning. You don't need materials, a studio, or years of training.
Only you and your thoughts, shaped into words.
I started writing regularly years ago, and it made me think more clearly. I became better at formulating ideas and more confident in my own judgement.
Writing is a form of art that taps into a human need for expression that makes life better.
How to get started writing online?
That's what I teach in my course: The Confident Writer.
This course shows you what you need to know if you’re unsure how to start, or you need to get back into it after a while.
You want to grow your audience, but you need direction on what to write and for whom, and you need to get out of your own way.
This course helps with all that. It’s the precursor to my Online Writing Alchemy course, which focuses more on how to level up your writing.
Several people emailed me after my last time closing this course, asking when it would reopen. They missed it and had to wait weeks.
So if you've been sitting on this course, now's your window.
I'm running a 'cheese pie' sale this week to celebrate my newfound obsession with Greek tiropita. The course closes this Sunday, January 25th at 3pm ET, and won't reopen for several weeks after that.
