The false promise of reinvention

. . .

Sometimes you have this urge to change everything.

You woke up heavy with thoughts.

Maybe you’ve just come out the other side of a failed project, a breakup, a dip.

And things feels off.

You want to quit your job.

Or change your work.

End your relationship.

Move countries.

Start a goat farm in the Pyrenees.

An indescribable craving to escape and start fresh.

I know the feeling.

I’ve been there many times.

Do I need to reinvent myself?

But I’ve learned that reinvention isn’t always the medicine it pretends to be.

Most of the time, what feels broken doesn’t mean anything needs fixing.

You don’t need to burn your life down.

You need to breathe and let the air clear.

That’s often when the truth reveals itself:

You’re not off-track.

You’re right where you need to be.

You’re just emotionally flooded.

A flood that tricks you into believing that starting anew is the answer.

But escape is often the pattern that keeps you stuck.

Again, and again, and again.

Real strength, I’ve found, is taking the data I now have and working with it.

You had a setback. Great. Data.

What does the data show you?

Be still and you’ll see the solution, right there as you sit on your sofa.

The solution I always find is to make a minor tweak or to simply continue.

It’s not about being a pushover to life’s chaos.

But rather, you’re re-establishing contact with the wiser part of you.

Focus now, not on summiting the mountain, but on your next 50 metres.
