The day I found purpose everywhere
It's not what most think
I used to get really stressed whenever I felt I lacked purpose.
I’d have mid-afternoon slumps tinged with a sense of crisis.
I’d spiral into thoughts like this: ‘I should have more purpose in my life than this by this age.’
I'd look at successful people and assume they had some grand mission I was missing.
Like they’d found some clear calling set for them that made every day meaningful.
It didn’t take long until the search for this elusive ‘purpose’ became its own source of anxiety for me.
Eventually, the adorable woodland creature in human form that is Eckhart Tolle introduced me to an idea that had a profound effect on me:
What you do matters less than how you do it.
This hit me like a sack of walnuts from a great height.
I realised I'd been treating purpose like every other miserable Tom, Dick and Harry.
...Like it was some destination. Something I needed to find ‘out there’ before I could feel fulfilled.
But does purpose need to be about reaching something?
What if real purpose was the energy you bring to whatever you do on the way?
When I write this email, I can do it mechanically whilst thinking about the bag of pork scratchings I want to munch in my cupboard.
Or I can be here with the writing, enjoying it, letting the words appear without forcing.
When I walk to the coffee shop, I can be lost in anxious thoughts about tomorrow. Or I can notice the beauty of simple things.
The quality of consciousness you bring to any moment is what makes it meaningful.
This is powerful because the more aware I am, the more creative, happy, effective I become.
And it’s this kind of energy that leads to success in the things we all think make us happy anyway.
I still have goals I get excited about. But now I make sure I'm conscious as I pursue them.
Being as aware as possible became my real purpose.
But I also discovered you can't access this awareness when overly stressed about everything.
And locking yourself out like that is a shame.
When your mind is caught in loops of worry, regret, or anxiety, presence becomes near impossible.
This is why the Untethered Mind course is so foundational.
It shows you how your own thoughts create your stress, and how to step out of mental patterns that keep you disconnected from the moment.
When you're free from unnecessary stress, a purposeful life is instantly within reach.
Toodles,
Alex
