The coffee shop thing I do (and why it matters)
Do you ever do that thing when you’re in a coffee shop...
You reach for your coffee.
You realise you’d finished it on the previous sip.
But you lift the mug to your mouth anyway.
And you literally pretend to drink it so you don’t look crazy to any poor, unsuspecting observer?
No?
Maybe it’s just me then.
In any case, this little moment demonstrates the power of short, relatable stories.
Here’s why this matters:
Because these little, seemingly mundane life events can be endless material for what I genuinely believe everyone needs to be building in the following decades:
Your audience.
Today, those who have attention have influence.
And no matter how much you hate being in the limelight, you need influence because it gives you options and security.
An audience gives you influence.
And you build an audience by creating content.
In this way, you are your own media company.
If you consistently create relatable, human content, you can develop a loyal and interested audience around you.
And when you have an audience, you become immune to many of the challenges most people will face in the coming years...
When more people know you and associate positive emotions with you, you have real leverage.
This kind of leverage helps you find work, sell products and services, inspire others, and lead to positive change and legacy.
More than anything, it gives you peace of mind, whether you actually sell anything or not.
I see investing time in this as a non-negotiable.
You can start building your audience by writing today.
You share a story with a little lesson or insight on Substack, for example.
People follow.
Your influence begins to grow...
