Stuck? Find a cause to fight
. . .
People often seem surprised when I tell them I’ve been writing continuously online for over fifteen years.
I never considered it that big a deal because it was something I just did.
I enjoy this, for the most part.
But more recently, it’s become clearer why I’ve kept it up while others around me drop like flies.
I’ve seen talented, fascinating people create beautiful things, whether writing, art, films, or podcasts.
But then, after a few months, they disappear.
I know why it’s often like this, and my reasoning isn’t conventional.
They weren’t doing it for something bigger.
They lacked a cause.
I know this is what many people say, but I never did this for the money alone.
It may have started that way, but it’s not what’s kept this going.
I see things in the world that bother me.
I write about things that bring relief to these problems.
Knowing I’m contributing like this, even if in a small way...
It makes creating and sharing things an easy sell for me.
And I think too many people lack this component.
They’re doing it solely for the money, status, to be liked, or to build a huge following.
They don’t get the results they want soon enough, so they stop.
That’s why you need some understanding of the enemy you’re fighting against.
An enemy is central to a cause worth fighting.
This enemy needn’t be a specific person. It can be a mindset, a status quo, or a trend.
For me, it’s always been seeing amazing people with incredible talent and potential...
But they’re not lit up. They’re overwhelmed, or too resistant to sharing their ideas, overly anxious or beaten back by life’s struggles.
This is what I fight against. The forces that keep you hidden.
The forces that block you from revealing your true self with confidence and exploring your potential.
What’s your enemy?
Your cause?
When you find a cause, your energy returns.
You live with a sense of meaning that drives you to get out there and create, even if it isn’t always comfortable.
It keeps you playing the long game.
If you’d like to explore what living with a cause might be like for you, I’d encourage you to write online.
That’s how I discovered a cause that kept me going and improved my mental health.
Online Writing Alchemy shows you how to turn your ideas into writing that demands attention and gives your mission the impact it deserves.
Best,
Alex
