She had 98 essays but zero readers

-

My client Amanda had a problem.

She'd been writing for three years.

She enjoyed pouring out her ideas.

Her Notion was stuffed with over 98 articles, and many were very good.

But her online follower count was a big, juicy zero.

She'd never actually published a single piece.

'I'm worried I'll attract unnecessary attention,' she told me during our first call.

'What if I damage my reputation before I've even built one?'

Amanda believed her writing had to be perfect to be publishable.

So she'd write, rewrite, and then come this close to sharing it, before deciding against it.

Most of her pieces were saved to her ever-growing graveyard of almost-ready drafts.

I asked her a simple question: 'What's the worst thing that could happen if you published something imperfect?'

She scratched her chin. 'People might think I was offensive.'

'And then what?'

'They might think I'm a bad person.'

'Amanda,' I said, 'people are going to disagree with you no matter what you write. Even if it's perfect. Especially if it's 'perfect…'

Then I said:

'What if you didn't need everyone to like your work to be a great writer?'

She started giggling. I think that's the moment it really clicked for her.

Disagreement from others is not a bug in publishing. It's a freaking FEATURE.

It's to be expected.

Knowing this helped me and Amanda let go, breathe, and finally hit publish.

When people disagree with your words, it means you've said something worth discussing. You've taken a stance. You've contributed to the conversation.

The only way to avoid disagreement is to say nothing at all.

Amanda published her first piece that week. Then another. And then another.

Five months later, she's publishing twice weekly and has built an audience of over 2,000 engaged readers who love her perspective and her personality.

Comfort with imperfection was the difference between making a real impact and staying invisible.

This mindset shift is one of several that I cover in Module 1 of The Confident Writer course.
