One flip to make your writing magnetic

The high-concept blueprint is here

I needed to write an article that grabbed people out of their scrolling slumber.

So I thought about what most people were writing:

Everyone says 'You just gotta find TIME for writing…'

Yawn Central.

I FLIPPED that sucker with a flourish of the wrist.

Instead, I came up with: "You already HAVE time. You just don't value writing enough to make it non-negotiable."

The message was that if you don't have time to write, it's not a time issue. It's a prioritisation issue.

If you aren't writing, you just don't care enough. (Sorry, Jenkins, it's true.)

That post generated more replies, shares, and debates than anything I'd written in months.

But, why?

Because I used a cheeky little trick I call inversion.

It's one of many writing flips we can use to spice up our words and increase engagement.

The inversion technique is the one I use in a large chunk of what I write.

It's also one often employed in many viral posts and videos.

Here's how it works:

Take a popular belief that everyone accepts.

Flip it on its head.

Say how the opposite is true.

But here's the key part: you have to be right.

Examples:

Popular belief: "More information leads to better decisions."

Inversion: "More information leads to paralysis by analysis."

Popular belief: "Weaknesses prevent success."

Inversion: "Being an underdog forces creativity and resilience." (Thanks, Malcolm Gladwell)

When you flip a belief people hold sacred, they stop scrolling.

It's unexpected, and it breaks patterns.

This is CATNIP for readers.

(here kitty kitty)

It makes your readers think, share and remember you.

Now, you may wonder why this matters to you as a creator and brand builder.

Here's why:

AI is flooding the internet with generic, safe content.

The same tips and quotes are being rehashed like clown makeup on a dead doll.

As you've heard me bang on about for months, no matter who you are, you need an audience, even if just a teensy weensy one.

You need people who hear from you regularly.

They represent support, income, and impact for you in a crumbling world.

But you'll never build that bleating on about the same stuff as Nancy and Ben.

People gloss over vanilla. It's harder work to attract your tribe that way.

You build it by writing ideas that make people think:

"I've never thought about it that way."
