I saw something that reminded me of how capable I really was
I saw it for the first time in rural Estonia
This summer, I was in rural Estonia for a month, driving solo across the country in search of cabin life.
I’d just arrived at a small hut in the north of the country, near a place called Nõva.
I could smell cut grass, the sun was shining, and cows were mooing.
It was idyllic, but I was still in my head.
I was thinking about my business. The ferry I had to catch the next day. I had fifty emails to respond to. I wasn’t at ease.
But then the night arrived.
Being so remote meant there was barely any light pollution.
I stepped out into the garden and sucked in the fresh air.
Then I looked up.
At nearly forty, this was the first time I’d seen it in all its splendour.
The Milky Way stretched out across a cloudless sky.
I held my breath for a moment.
I had no idea you could see a cloudy cluster of billions of stars, streaked across the sky like this, with the naked eye.
I thought this was only for National Geographic double-page spreads.
But here it was.
It’s like the night sky was saying: ‘So what? You didn’t think we were here all this time?’
It sure was.
And for a good ten minutes, I felt simultaneously tiny and powerful.
I’d forgotten entirely about my previous stresses. I was present, my thoughts stopped stirring, and I felt incredibly hopeful.
These moments don’t need to be reserved for rare celestial sightings.
We have continual access to this ever-present feeling of bliss.
It’s there when we slow down for a moment.
It’s there when we disconnect our identities from our worried thoughts.
We connect with the majesty of the Universe (because that’s who you really are). And we can do this whether in Northern Estonia or walking through a crowded street.
It’s there in the absence of self —and other— criticism.
When you reconnect like this, everything seems possible again, because so much is when we’re not lost in the illusion of our thoughts.
If you need an extra hand showing you how to experience this clarity more of the time, Untethered Mind course guides you through everything you need to know.
To your clarity, joy and success,
Alex
