It took me a few years to realise how vital it was for me to build an online audience.
I wanted to make money while I slept.
And I wanted to make an impact.
So I knew that an email newsletter was going to pave the way.
But a year into building my audience, I had a problem.
I was growing and making some money.
BUT I felt a lot of resistance when I sat down to write.
I had what I call 'writer's claw.' I just didn't feel connected to most of it, and I was frustrated.
At that time, I believed online success only meant getting more email subscribers. And I thought getting more subscribers meant being there to solve more problems.
So I'd write about productivity one day, then SEO tactics the next, then business strategy after that. Whatever I thought would attract the most people.
Looking at the massive range of topics I was covering made me realise:
I was burning out because I was trying to serve everyone instead of people I truly gave a crap about.
I knew that tribe was out there.
So, I narrowed down.
I made my blog specifically about marketing online for illustrators, in other words, people like me building digital art businesses through the Internet at that time.
These were people who, in my mind, worked in the same field and shared my passions, ambitions and struggles.
Knowing this was who I was creating for energised me big time.
I finally started to feel like I could care deeply.
That was my tribe. Yours might be different.
Maybe it's people who share your values, your sense of humour, or your vision for how the world should work.
The point is you need to figure out what connects these people as you create more content.
When I found my tribe, I started writing more from passion, about what I genuinely believed. I stopped watering down my opinions.
Some people left. Fair enough. The ones who stayed, however, became obsessed.
They bought everything I created. They mentioned my name to people.
Creating didn't feel draining anymore.
Most creators think burnout comes from doing too much.
Nah. It comes from doing work that doesn't grab you emotionally.
When you're aligned with what energises you and speaking to people who actually get it, you can create for decades without burning out.
