I finally stopped living in fear

-

Fear kept making me do things that weren’t me.

It’s a feeling that can be the difference between enjoying your life and living in a hell of your own making.

I was paralysed by fear for long and terrible stretches of my youth.

Often it takes a punch to the face to wake up to the fact that life is too damn short to be continually knocked back by fear.

But not always.

We can see its effect in the little things, too.

The small choices that feel protective, but keep us small and held in a bubble of shame.

Either way, how did I learn to stop living in fear?

It came to me one day.

I knew I wasn’t going to keep readjusting my life according to an uncomfortable feeling in my chest.

Instead, I’d set the example.

I set the example by choosing not to live in fear anymore.

I know I will never be free of uncomfortable feelings, but I can choose not to be swallowed whole by them.

By doing this, I give those around me a gentle kind of permission to also choose a life free of fear.

That was the secret. To show others they, too, can be free of fear.

I did this, not in any drastic way.

I did this by creating things, speaking my mind, and sharing these thoughts with strangers.

Even if I felt like a right burk doing it sometimes.

It’s not always sunshine and bloody rainbows.

It can be painful.

And by doing what can hurt, I throw light on the path to freedom for you too.

This is on offer for you.

By living in such a way that demonstrates you feel fear and do things in the face of it...

You wake up not just yourself.

You inspire a tribe.

A community.

A following.

A lot of this was achieved for me through writing. I’d have probably lost my mind long ago had I never made that commitment to write consistently.

That’s my tool.

That’s how I live without being controlled by fear.

You can do this too:

  • Share your fears.

  • Show your flaws.

  • Step into the unknown.

  • Share your opinion without varnish.

Do not cower.

Because by allowing fear to direct you, you pass on the message that fear should win.

But the only winning play is to let the shadow of fear fall behind you.
