How breaking my wrist made me more creative.
. . .
When I was sixteen, we went on a family holiday to the mountains of Colorado.
One night at my Uncle’s house, who had rented a large cabin, I fell out of a seven-foot-high bunk bed.
I woke up in mid-fall.
And then I broke my wrist.
I remember how it unfolded.
When I was going to bed, I saw a firefly in a nook in the wall. So I shimmied away from it, before falling asleep.
One roll over was all it took.
After the fall, I had many good reasons why falling wasn’t my fault.
The homeowner should have put a barricade on the side of the bed.
It was the firefly’s fault.
It was my parent’s fault for taking me to that house.
It took me some mental finagling to finally realise it was my fault.
This marked a turning point in my life because I realised how freeing it feels to take responsibility.
Blaming others might feel empowering, but it actually weakens us.
We see ourselves as a victim.
This is draining. You lose out with this thinking.
But taking responsibility for EVERYthing is energising.
And when we’re energised, we’re far more creative.
We find solutions come to us more easily.
We feel more optimistic and get more done.
Take responsibility for everything, even if it doesn’t seem like your fault.
Creativity will follow.
