One of my coaching clients, James, came to me with a recurring frustration.
On paper, his life looked solid.
He’d built a web design business from scratch, had several employees, earned good money, and had plenty of freedom.
But once or twice a week, James would disappear into a spiral of overthinking that left him drained and frustrated.
It always started with a single thought, something along the lines of:
‘I should be further along by now.’
...Often because he’d scroll social media, comparing himself to others who were making more money than he was.
This thought would balloon into an afternoon of rumination that took his mind off everything else.
He’d replay past decisions, question every move, compare himself to more people online, imagine falling behind, and feel sick with doubt.
Half the day was gone by the time he snapped out of it.
This is what I call 1.0 thinking.
It’s where I was, for the most part, until my mid-twenties.
1.0 thinking can feel like you’re taking back control - that’s why it’s so addictive.
But it’s actually a form of self-sabotage.
And the losses are obvious.
What changed for James wasn’t some motivational high or a big achievement. It was far simpler than that.
I introduced an upgraded style of thinking that has served me for over a decade now:
2.0 Thinking.
This has everything to do with catching yourself before you spiral.
2.0 Thinking is the art of never allowing escalating thoughts to happen in the first place.
It’s subtle, but the comparative difference and effect on your life can be immense.
Imagine your days when thoughts rarely, if ever, escalated into rumination.
What difference would that make for you?
I never showed James any clever tactics.
Because 2.0 Thinking is all about revising your understanding of how thinking works. It’s the understanding that puts you at peace.
Catching yourself becomes easier when we know that not one of your thoughts needs to be taken seriously.
It’s a practice that you get better at. And if you’d like a shortcut to 2.0 Thinking, you might like my Untethered Mind course.
It’s THE 2.0 Thinking course. It shows you, sequentially, everything you need to know this week to upgrade your understanding of your mind so you rarely feel compelled to overthink.
This course will NOT eradicate all your worries. But it will drastically impact how much you worry, depending on how conscious you are of your thinking style.
