Having the freedom to disappear

A soft breeze brushes my neck as I scribble thoughts in my notebook.

I’m eavesdropping again on the next table.

It’s one of my favourite things ever.

Especially when the sun is out, and it’s cool.

This is day four of my spontaneous mental reset.

Full days of doing pretty much nothing.

No alarms. No guilt. Just space.

It’s a lot easier to take time off to reset the mind on a whim when you have your own business.

No boss to ask.

Just a last-second decision to withdraw and interrupt patterns.

The best kind of business is one that pays you for sharing your passions, knowledge and insights.

I’ve been making money while I sleep this way because I have an audience connected to online systems that sell products.

But here’s what actually makes it all work:

Many people know me, are familiar with me, and trust my ideas.

(Except Martin, who’s a bit of a meany)

There’s emotional connection.

And it’s this emotional connection that gives me freedom and choice.

If you want to build something similar, you need to learn how to connect too.

I learned that to enjoy freedom, I had to matter to people.

And I didn’t — not for a long time.

Barely anyone cared at the beginning.

People scroll past things that don’t connect.

But they tune in when they feel something, whether through humour, warmth or relatability.

That’s emotional connection.

And a big part of that is being likeable.

The good news is: being likeable, in writing, in business, and in life…

Is learnable.

For example, many like-minded people will connect when you talk about what you vehemently disagree with.

Or when you infuse playfulness into your words.

Imagine people wanting to hear from you.

Clients seeking you out. Sales coming in while you rest. Opportunities opening up because people like how you show up.
