Finding purpose in the small things
-
Talk to most people over a glass of wine these days, and they’ll tell you things could be way better.
They’re dissatisfied with their work.
They lack a sense of purpose.
They feel burned out.
They just want to travel or get lost in entertainment.
What many feel, like I did for years, is that void created in the absence of meaningful contribution.
We contribute by making others’ lives better.
It could be that you parent strong children, run an animal sanctuary, teach or coach, build a charitable project, or mentor others.
This is the stuff that creates fulfilment that many lack.
Contribution.
I know I’ve lost my sense of consistent contribution when I feel bored or depressed. It comes and goes.
And it is remedied by this understanding.
I need to get out of my own insecurities and back into doing things that help others.
I found a way to do this when I started writing consistently online.
Online writing allows you to write something one morning and have others reading it that same day on a heavily trafficked site like Medium, Substack, or LinkedIn.
I did it for money to start, but over time, I realised how vital this habit was for me and my mental health.
It opened the window to consistent contribution.
And with that, life no longer felt meaningless and dull.
Writing works because it’s a low-barrier to entry.
You don’t need a huge budget or expensive setup to write and hit publish.
You can write on a park bench on your phone in a ten-minute snatch.
You can write on a flight, in a waiting room or on your sofa.
If you feel dissatisfied, create something that improves the lives of others - even if it’s in a tiny way - and do it consistently...
= Purpose unlocked.
