Crete had me feeling weird

enter the Weird

I arrived in Heraklion, Crete, late last night for three weeks to escape the winter.

I’d been looking forward to this trip for weeks.

But the morning before my flight, I felt strangely sentimental.

Warsaw is in a deep-freeze. It’s cold and dark. Crete’s sun was calling. But a part of me didn’t want to go.

I’m like one of these Cretan cats who meows outside for twenty minutes, then just stares at you when you finally open the door.

And even being here today, though my senses are awake, and I am liking this cooler warmth (if that’s a thing), I am feeling…resistance.

I couldn’t place where this was coming from, until this morning, eating a particularly sharp cheese pie, when it made sense.

It’s that familiar resistance to stepping out of the bounds of “normal.”

That low-level discomfort of being somewhere unfamiliar on my own, and needing to adapt while running a business remotely.

For most, what I am doing is not ‘normal.’

I’m not really on holiday, nor am I at home base.

It’s in between.

I feel like doing this is weird. That’s the resistance.

And I’m immersed in it right now.

I’m happy to be here, of course. But these little resistances are part of this kind of life.

When you make a living from writing like I do, with no boss and no one telling you what to do, you’d think it would feel like freedom all the time.

Not quite.

You call all the shots. And when a bit of resistance shows up (and a hint of sentimentality for the way things were), it doesn’t mean you’re doing it wrong.

It means you’re experiencing what is part of this game.

When you’re doing things different to most, you will feel these feelings.

It certainly happens when you do more of what matters most to you.

Resistance is inevitable, and if you’re doing things alone, that can sometimes be felt with an amplified pinch.

No worries.

Take a breath, go for a walk, give yourself space to acclimatise to the Weird, and observe your heavy feelings melt away.
