Creativity happens in motion
(The secret we forget again and again)
There have been many days when I couldn’t think of what to write.
I don’t like the feeling.
It’s like standing on the edge of a steep precipice.
Years of this queasy feeling and a commitment to getting great taught me that my only choice was to write anyway.
Often, I didn’t even know where I was going until I’d written a healthy number of crappy sentences.
Creativity isn’t a gift from the gods that strikes when the stars align. It’s born in motion.
That’s the biggest challenge for anyone trying to create consistently.
And it’s amazing how icky feelings can completely derail someone with huge potential talent.
You can’t wait for the perfect mood, the perfect idea, or the perfect time.
You just have to lean into doing.
This applies to anything. Writing, painting, building a business, and working out.
The key is to get into whatever form of initial motion is needed for the creative task at your fingertips.
Even if you feel like warmed up cat turd. Even if you have no ideas.
The first few minutes might feel clunky or pointless. But something happens when you simply create through the resistance. Ideas emerge. Momentum builds. And suddenly, you’re kicking ass and creating.
I know this isn’t the first time you’ve heard this. But often we need to hear the simple stuff twice.
The alternative is waiting for that ‘someday’ to come, and it never will.
If self-sabotage keeps you stuck, it doesn’t have to.
Learning to manage your thoughts so that consistent creating comes more easily is a skill anyone can develop.
In my Untethered Mind course, I teach you how to manage your thoughts like a pro so that insight quickly replaces any self-doubt. Getting good at this only requires a shift in perspective.
Toodles,
Alex
